Artificial Intelligence and Creativity: Opportunity or Threat
Apr 15, 2025

Location Loughborough University, London
Description Until recently experts believed that creative jobs and businesses would be among the least vulnerable to AI and robotisation. However, in recent years these views have changed with the acceleration of Generative AI tools, which are already used as a low-cost substitute for creator labour previously done by humans. Undoubtedly, AI systems not only have made an impact on human creativity but have gone as far as generating new and original content, prompting some scholars to describe machine-based generative outputs as ‘artificial creativity’ (Moruzzi, 2021; Runco, 2023a, 2023b).

There are currently two discourses: on the one hand, there are enthusiasts who stress that the adoption and use of AI as a tool brings increased potential for creative tasks, expanding the reach and speed of search beyond the localised imagination of people, and ultimately resulting in augmented human talent and creativity. Digitisation of creative content has made professionals more productive and saved thousands of hours of tedious “grunt work” in activities like animation, where AI can substitute for repetitive rendering, freeing workers attention for higher-level and potentially more creative tasks.

Against this promise and opportunity sceptics report that work is already being lost, particularly in the more precarious freelance sector. Moreover, AI models depend on creative content produced by humans, which is exploited without regard for the human sources and their remuneration, since Intellectual Property enforcement is difficult with online content. From this respect, there are concerns that AI systems will eventually diminish human creativity and jeopardise the future of jobs, businesses and entire industries, including education institutions serving those industries.

This event will bring together these two contrasting perspectives to consider both sides and debate the opportunities and threats of AI for creativity.

The panel for this discussion is made up of:

Dr Anna Brown, Senior Lecturer, University of St Andrews Business School
Vanessa Marr, Principal Lecturer, School of Art and Media, University of Brighton
Hannah Ayre, Participatory Artist, Educator and Producer, Edinburgh
Dr Sam Vettese, Senior Lecturer, School of Arts and Creative Industries, Edinburgh Napier University

Still on the theme of craft changing the world, there will be an exhibition of Vanessa Marr's Domestic Dusters project displayed throughout the Wardlaw Museum throughout March 2025. Vanessa will be lecturing in St Andrews on Thursday 20 March 2025 at The Gateway, sharing insights into her stitch-based approach to research, work that resists gendered expectations of domesticity and positions embroidery and commonplace household cloths as the catalyst for feminist and change-making conversations.

Confronting "Anti-Gender" Mobilizations across Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, and Russia: Challenges and Queer-Feminist Resistances
Mar 3, 2025

Location Date: Monday, March 3, 2025; 9:30–16:30 CET (Warsaw time); Online & In-person: Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Staszic Palace (Pałac Staszica), Nowy Świat 72, 00-330 Warsaw, Poland

Registration link (for both on
Description We invite researchers, students, activists, and the public to participate in our one-day workshop (hybrid-online and in-person sessions). During the event, the RESIST Project Team and our guest speakers will lead discussions on queer-feminist resistances to “anti-gender” mobilizations in and across Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, and Russia – four distinct national case studies that intersect at a transnational level through migration patterns, recently amplified by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the 2020 and 2025 presidential elections in Belarus ( Filep, 2024).
While studies show that “anti-gender” and anti-immigration mobilizations are often closely intertwined ( RESIST Project Team, 2024), issues related to gender identity and sexuality may be deprioritized by women and queer persons amid immediate survival challenges, such as migrant status, housing, employment, and health. Even in contexts not immediately threatened by war or political repression, multiply marginalized persons might be forced to choose between the ideals of gender and sexual diversity and pragmatic solutions related to other identity positions, e.g. living with a physical disability or experiencing homelessness ( Kulpa and Kania, 2024). Still, addressing and resisting “anti-gender” violence remains vital to queer-feminist movements both within and across Eastern European nations, with migration opening the possibility of cross-national collaboration. The dynamics of de- and reprioritization invite critical reflection, along with the internal tensions stemming from individual intersectional identities and the patterns of solidarity and animosity that develop across borders, migratory routes, and communities. Together, these factors create a complex landscape of displacement and belonging, shaping the experiences of individuals navigating “anti-gender” politics in the region.
Starting with a presentation of findings from the RESIST Project’s Polish and Belarusian cases, we would like to open the floor for a broader discussion on resistances to “anti-gender” mobilizations in Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Russia and transnationally along migratory routes. By combining panel presentations with free-flowing ideation workshop and experience-sharing sessions, we hope to create a space of creative and respectful discussion.

This event is co-organised by the RESIST Project, the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences, and Edinburgh Napier University.
