European Metropolitan Transport Authorities
May 12, 2016
Location Budapest Description Dr Achille Fonzone participated in the meeting of the European Metropolitan Transport Authorities (http://emta.com/) in Budapest on 12.5.16. Prof Jan-Dirk Schmoecker from Kyoto University and Dr Fonzone presented and discussed the first results of their research on public transport fare structure. The survey highlights that public transport authorities are generally concerned with the “fairness” of their fares. However “fair fare” has different meanings in different contexts. The research attracted the interest of the very qualified audience, including representatives of the main transport authorities in Europe and members of the consortium of CIPTEC - Collective Innovation for Public Transport in European Cities (http://ciptec.eu/). Prof Schmoecker and Dr Fonzone are now discussing with EMTA further developments of the work. For more information, please contact Dr Fonzone at a.fonzone@napier.ac.uk. Transport Research Institute at Edinburgh Napier University is hosting a workshop on Smart Urban Mobility on November 26-27th 2015
Jun 17, 2015
Description Selected participants will be invited to submit a paper related to their presentation for publication in a special issue of Transportation Research Part A. The workshop will feature keynote speeches from - Professor Glenn Lyons, University Of West of England - Professor Patricia Mokhtarian, Georgia Institute of Technology - Professor Mohammed Quddus, Loughborough University - Professor Vonu Thakuriah, University of Glasgow ----------- CONTENT ------------ Home to an ever growing share of the world's population (54% in 2014, projected to rise to 66% in 2050 when between 6 and 7 billion people will live in a city), and facing dramatic and extremely dynamic social transformations, economic challenges and environmental problems, cities are undoubtedly the key arena of the history of the 21st century. As cities strive to be more and more attractive, sustainable and efficient, they must also become smarter. Related to this, no city can aspire to play a leading - global or local - role if its mobility system is not smart enough. Urban mobility becomes smart when smart actors take advantage of smart technology in the context of smart regulations, policies, plans and interactions. In a smart mobility system, real-time big data is collected from, shared among and used by controllers, travellers, vehicles, and infrastructure. Local and global decision makers integrate and analyse data, make short and long-term predictions based on the resulting information, and take actions to improve travel experience and system operations while reducing the consumption of resources and the impact on the environment. Smart and connected (and in the next future driverless) vehicles; alternative fuel and electric vehicles; car and bike sharing schemes; vehicle tracking technologies; advanced traveller real-time information; smart booking, hailing and ticketing systems; communication through social media and virtual networks are but a few of the phenomena that characterise cities' changing mobility paradigms; more will be developing. Nowadays people want to buy mobility packages and vehicles manufacturers are restyling themselves as mobility service providers. Further research is clearly needed in concepts, approaches, technologies and behaviors related to smart urban mobility systems. The special issue aims to foster reflection on smart mobility in urban contexts. We are looking for papers dealing with visions, policy and plans, case studies, evaluation, analysis and simulation of urban smart mobility systems. Potential topics include, but are not limited to - New concepts, case studies, and benchmarking of urban mobility - Smart mobility in small to medium size cities and network of cities - Agent behaviour in smart urban mobility system - Freight smart urban mobility - Big data and advanced real-time traveler information in urban context - Models of smart urban mobility systems - Economic and environmental impacts of smart urban mobility - Wider transport policy implications of smart urban mobility - Smart urban mobility and wider changes in urban areas - Institutional and legal aspects of smart urban mobility ------------------ SUBMISSIONS ------------------ An abstract of up to 500 words has to be submitted to a.fonzone@napier.ac.uk by 19 July 2015 for consideration in the workshop. Prospective authors are encouraged to contact the organisers to discuss the relevance of their contributions and the participation in the workshop. The call for paper of the special issue of Transportation Research Part A is available at www.journals.elsevier.com/transportation-research-part-a-policy-and-practice/call-for-papers/special-issue-on-the-topic-of-smart-urban-mobility/. The special issue may exceptionally consider works not presented during the workshop. For the special issue, authors are encouraged to use Elsevier's online multimedia tools and submit supplementary materials such as simulation code and data, video, and AudioSlides along with their manuscripts. All submissions will go through the journal's standard peer-review process. For guidelines to prepare your manuscript and for manuscript submission, please visit http://ees.elsevier.com/tra/default.asp. When submitting your manuscript, please choose article type "Smart Urban Mobility". This is to ensure that your submission is considered for this special issue instead of being handled as a regular paper. After submission, authors should inform the guest editors. ------------------------ IMPORTANT DATES ------------------------ - Submission of abstracts : July 19th 2015 - Abstracts selected: August 3rd 2015 - Workshop with presentation of selected papers: November 26th and 27th 2015 - Invitations to submit full papers for consideration in TR-A: December 18th 2015 - Manuscript for Transportation Research part A (for both papers presented at the workshop and other papers): February 15th 2016 - Manuscript rejection/revision/acceptance: May 16th 2016 - Revised paper: August 15th 2016 - Final acceptance/rejection: October 17th 2016 - Final paper: November 14th 2016 - Expected publication: February 2017 (tentative) ---------------- ORGANISERS ---------------- Professor Tom Rye (Guest Editor) Edinburgh Napier University t.rye@napier.ac.uk Professor Wafaa Saleh (Guest Editor) Edinburgh Napier University w.saleh@napier.ac.uk Dr Achille Fonzone (Guest Editor) Edinburgh Napier University a.fonzone@napier.ac.uk People Achille Fonzone

Dr Achille Fonzone - Invite to Kyoto University
Oct 22, 2014
Description Dr Fonzone was invited to visit Kyoto University between the 22nd and 26th September to start a collaboration with local researchers on a project concerning transit fare models. The project aims to understand how public transport passengers decide their routes when a complex fare system (like the London tube zone-based fare system) is adopted in the network. This knowledge will then be implemented in assignment models able to predict passenger flows in transport networks with frequent services, like those which are normally in operation in medium and large cities. The Japanese team includes Professor Jan-Dirk Schmöcker (Kyoto University), Professor Fumitaka Kurauchi (Gifu University) and Professor Daisuke Fukuda (Tokyo University). During his stay, Dr Fonzone held a seminar for ITS Lab of Kyoto University on his research on the impact of real-time information on the usage of public transport systems.
