BSL in Embodied Music Interaction

People Involved

Project Description

This is an exploratory study in the field of Embodied Music Interaction (EMI) to greater understand how British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters categorise music for the hearing impaired. EMI looks at how music makes us move, the affordances of sound and music, and gestural interaction with music and sound design software.
Previous research questioned what movement a sound affords, and how gestures can be mapped to audio processing, providing a valuable contribution to knowledge. However, the participants involved had normal hearing. Thus, we know little about the gesture-sound relationships among those with mild to severe hearing impairment.
