An advanced up-converter (UC) luminescent concentrator model is investigated in this research. The model combines photon management with nanotechnology-based, luminescent materials, to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) solar cells. The concept consists of a luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) - a polymer with embedded nanocrystal quantum dots (NQD), which absorb near-infrared (NIR) light up to 1520 nm, and an emission profile that overlaps with the absorption band of the UC, at approximately 1540 nm. The UC emits photons with energies above the band gap of the silicon solar cell. A three dimensional ray-trace modelling is carried out to investigate this approach and an optical efficiency improvement of 1% was calculated. The simulation process and results are discussed.
