Project Description
Derek Hoy was a Scottish nurse based predominantly in Glasgow who died in 2012. He worked for many years in the National Health Service (NHS) in a variety of clinical roles, where he began to experiment with computers and other technologies in healthcare. He then moved to teach and do research at Glasgow Caledonian University where he specialised in an up and coming area of nursing called informatics. This project will explore his life i.e. clinical practice, teaching and research and its impact on Scotland. The research he published will be reviewed and his wife, co-workers at Glasgow Caledonian University, Scottish Government and the University of Manchester will be interviewed to understand the contribution he made to nursing informatics over 20 years. This will be important to establish why he pursued this area and how he developed computer applications for the NHS and patients, to help educate and inspire other nurses to use technology in their practice.
