Linking microbial genes to methane emissions from peatlands under water-table changes

People Involved

Project Description

• Explore methane producing methanogens and methane consuming methanotrophs diversity
and functional genes across multiple peatland sites under water table changes and
quantitatively link it to methane fluxes.
• Study populations of methanogens and methanotrophs using metagenomic-assembled
genomes to characterize their role in ecosystem-level controls on peatland methane cycling.
• Investigate the subset of active methane cycling archaea and bacteria as well as other
interacting microbes in peatlands using stable isotope probing to quantify their role in
ecosystem methane flux.
