Bridging AI Gaps: A Comparative Study on Developing a Robust AI Maturity Framework for the UK and Japan

People Involved

Project Description

The proposed research project focuses on creating an Artificial Intelligence (AI) maturity framework for organisations, with a particular emphasis on the Japanese and UK contexts. This research is crucial due to the accelerating adoption of AI in these countries and the associated challenges that need addressing. Japan and the UK are both advanced economies with a strong focus on technology and innovation. They have recognised the potential of AI in transforming various sectors, from manufacturing to healthcare, and from finance to education. However, the effective and responsible implementation of AI requires a comprehensive understanding of its implications at different stages of organisational growth.

An AI maturity framework provides a roadmap for organisations to assess their current capabilities, identify gaps, and plan for future development. It encompasses various aspects, including technology infrastructure, data management, governance, ethical considerations, and workforce skills. In the absence of such a framework, organisations may struggle to harness the full benefits of AI or mitigate its risks effectively. In the context of Japan, where society is rapidly ageing, AI offers solutions to maintain productivity levels and improve eldercare. However, the responsible use of AI, particularly in sensitive areas like healthcare, necessitates a robust framework that ensures ethical and privacy considerations are addressed. In the UK, where AI is a central part of the government's industrial strategy, a maturity framework can guide organisations in aligning their AI strategies with national objectives, fostering a culture of AI literacy, and navigating regulatory requirements. It can also help address the challenges of algorithmic bias and transparency, which are critical for maintaining public trust in AI technologies.

Therefore, this research proposal aims to develop an AI maturity framework that not only aids organisations in Japan and the UK in their AI journey but also contributes to the broader discourse on responsible AI implementation. It is expected that the findings of this research will provide valuable insights for policymakers, industry leaders, and academics in these countries and beyond.
