This project offers a novel way of engaging with data about creative practice: getting data on the possibilities and best practices for using particular materials out of the heads of individual creatives and makers and into a repository which can be disseminated across the creative industries as a whole. Developing such a design library has the potential to be of highly valuable impact to creative practitioners across a range of disciplines.
Further, this project aligns with the sustainability aims of Creative Informatics and the wider Creative Clusters programme through the use of recycled composite materials in this project. Enabling these materials to be more widely understood and practically used may accelerate displacing traditional plastics in the long term.
The panel has decided to fund this proposal, and we offer a few reflection questions to help guide the project to completion: reviewers noted that the financing covers researcher fees but did not include any budget for materials or overhead costs, though there is a mention of in-kind contribution from The Scottish Leather Group. Are there travel costs or other material costs to the project that haven’t been considered in the budget? While a website to disseminate the findings is mentioned as one of the core research outputs there is no budget allocated for developing this. The panel noted this application is part of a wider research existing project; will this include the delivery of the portfolio website?
