Capturing the insights of parents of athletes in performance pathways

People Involved

Project Description

The Project
sportscotland is looking to contract a researcher to deliver an online survey and 6 focus groups with parents of performance pathway athletes from 4-6 sports, representing team, individual, combat and target orientated sports.

The research is required, to improve our understanding of the life of parenting a performance pathway athlete and inform design of a range of parent support resources. We expect the contact to run for a period of approximately 6-8 months, beginning ideally in June 2019.

Research questions

The principal aim is to enhance our understanding of the parenting journey. We would like to explore:
- The thoughts and feelings of parents in relation to their child’s athletic journey to becoming
a High Performance athlete.
- The core challenges and strengths of parenting a performance pathway athlete.
- Points of uncertainty, where additional information would help the parent help their child
- Establish whether information on the socio-psychological support is of interest to parents
- Understand if and how they would like to engage with support
