Heat Networks: Latest Developments and Research Opportunities
2024 - 2024

Description Good research starts with good questions. Heat networks are expected to replace the gas network in large parts of Scottish cities. These networks are significant energy infrastructure which can be campus, city, or regional scale. A large-scale approach enables to maximize their benefits, but this requires a comprehensive approach and a strategic vision. The development of heat networks in Scotland presents both opportunities but also challenges. The research community has a key role to play in this new energy landscape.
What to expect from this event
(i)An insight from the latest developments in the heat network sector in Scotland and Edinburgh,
(ii)An opportunity to discuss and ask questions that should be addressed by the research community,
(iii)An opportunity to network with key stakeholders in either the heat network sector or the research community.

Conference: "Community heating networks"/ Fringe Festival
2023 - 2023

Description Co-organization of a seminar targeting general public and dedicated to the development of heat networks in Scotland. The event was built around the following questions:
- What is a heat network?
- Should we wait for hydrogen in our gas grid? (spoiler alert: No)
- What is the new energy trilemma in the UK?
- What are the benefits of low-temperature heat networks?
- How can you get your home ready? Is it very disruptive to connect?
- What is the track record of heat network development in Edinburgh (and why it stalled)?
- What have we learned in the past 12 months as a community group?
- How community groups can take the lead on the decarbonisation agenda (example of the Edinburgh Solar Coop)?
- Beyond Edinburgh: Setting a vision for "#HeatHighways"

Workshop with High School students
2023 - 2023

Description Speaker and panel member during the "Future Institute at Dollar Academy (FIDA) Sustainable Building Challenge". The project involved 32 students from Alva and Lornshill Academy (Clackmannanshire), Wallace High School (Stirling), and Dollar Academy. The students had one week to work on the retrofit of a typical 1860 Scottish cottage. They looked at layout, energy efficiency solutions, low-carbon energy supply, comfort of occupant, indoor air quality, and impact on biodiversity. They produced impressive presentations. We presented the ongoing research at Napier University and provided guidance on building performance and retrofit options, as well as an insight in the future of heating in Scotland.
