East London NHS Foundation Trust and National University of Lesotho Mental Healthcare Strengthening Project. Maseru Lesotho. LSL116,428.15
2021 - 2022

Recognition Type Public/Community Engagement
Description The aim of this project was to strengthen psychiatric-mental health care in Lesotho through a programme of training of trainers (key senior mental health professionals) with cascaded learning and remote support. The new partnership emerged from the 2021 THET UKPHS programme. NUL wished to develop a mental health partnership owing to the absence of any qualified psychiatrists nationally. Strong partner commitments and an expected mutual benefit through shared learning and health system strengthening were initially cancelled by the UK FCDO decision to cut all ODA funded health programmes. However, the partnership was able to provide vital remote Covid-19 clinical training to Lesotho mental health colleagues at minimal cost and maintain professional relationships and distance support hence demonstrating the mutual commitment to long-term partnership under difficult circumstances. In 2022 the initiative was funded by THET Global Health Partnerships programme. It managed to capacitate and support primary health care practitioners to deliver high-value care to people with mental disorders, including increased prescription of lifestyle interventions. The intervention also designed and promoted the implementation of non-medical management strategies of mental disorders in the community.

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). 7th Country Programme Evaluation in Lesotho. LSL89,250.00
2022 - 2023

Recognition Type Pre-Napier Funded Projects
Description This evaluation aimed to provide the UNFPA Lesotho country office, national stakeholders, and rights holders with an independent assessment of the UNFPA Lesotho 7th country programme and to broaden the evidence base to inform the design of the next programme cycle. The evaluation concluded that the 7th country programme was well-adapted and aligned to intentional frameworks, national priorities and population needs in the development and humanitarian context during the period of evaluation. The evaluation recommended that UNFPA should strengthen strategic partnerships, capacities, and institutional frameworks, particularly government institutions to facilitate implementation, monitoring and fulfilment of the mandate while at the same time addressing the felt needs of the country, in addition to advocacy for enhanced replication of
successful 7th country programme initiatives for enhanced results, targeting hard-to-reach and marginalised communities in the country.
