United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). 7th Country Programme Evaluation in Lesotho
2022 - 2023

Recognition Type Pre-Napier Funded Projects
Description This evaluation aimed to provide the UNFPA Lesotho country office, national stakeholders, and rights holders with an independent assessment of the UNFPA Lesotho 7th country programme and to broaden the evidence base to inform the design of the next programme cycle. The evaluation concluded that the 7th country programme was well-adapted and aligned to intentional frameworks, national priorities and population needs in the development and humanitarian context during the period of evaluation. The evaluation recommended that UNFPA should strengthen strategic partnerships, capacities, and institutional frameworks, particularly government institutions to facilitate implementation, monitoring and fulfilment of the mandate while at the same time addressing the felt needs of the country, in addition to advocacy for enhanced replication of
successful 7th country programme initiatives for enhanced results, targeting hard-to-reach and marginalised communities in the country.

UNESCO-TWAS. Antimicrobial resistance of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae in Maseru, Lesotho
2022 - 2023

Recognition Type Pre-Napier Funded Projects
Description The objectives of the study were to determine AMR patterns of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to seven antibiotics relevant to clinical treatment, with a specific focus on the frequency of resistance to ciprofloxacin (a current first-line drug for gonorrhoea according to Lesotho STI management protocol) and determine the molecular mechanisms associated with antimicrobial resistance and the population diversity of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains using whole genome sequencing to inform treatment regimens and public health interventions.
The study observed a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae which was of great concern as it confirmed that ciprofloxacin and doxycycline were not efficacious for the treatment of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Lesotho. It is imperative to change the antimicrobial drugs in the syndromic treatment regimen, preferably to azithromycin and ceftriaxone. The findings highlighted the urgency to implement diagnostics for sexually transmitted infections care in Lesotho.
