Project Title Applying constructive alignment to recruitment and admissions processes for postgraduate creative writing
Project Description In this independent professional study I will report on a learning and teaching initiative I have helped develop and lead since 2011. The Master of Arts (MA) Creative Writing programme team at Edinburgh Napier University is running a pilot scheme that applies the principles of constructive alignment to postgraduate admissions processes. Like several other taught postgraduate creative disciplines at Edinburgh Napier, there is no undergraduate programme that feeds directly into our course. MA Creative Writing has to recruit from outside the university, making it vital that our admissions process works well and smoothes the transition into higher education for applicants. This study details how we introduced live teaching and learning activities into selection procedures to give the applicants a deeper insight to our programme, while seeking to better identity students who would benefit most from our unique course. It also considers this pilot scheme within the context of academic quality in admissions and the United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). The studies examines the impact on internationalisation of our pilot scheme. Our programme is attracting ever more international applicants, particularly from the United States, which makes enhancing their student experience increasingly important. This study considers other postgraduate creative disciplines in the School of Arts & Creative Industries to see whether the pilot scheme initiative could be adopted or adapted for use within their admissions processes. Finally, this study examines the benefits for students and staff of the pilot scheme and make recommendations about its future.
