The HKIE Structural Division Structural Excellence Award 2022 - Awards Presentation
2023

Description Award presentation of Structural Excellent Award (SEA) 2022

The research focused on improving the torsion test method widely used to determine the mechanical properties of timber beams. It focused on quantifying the shear/torsional stiffness of the laminated glass beams utilizing The photogrammetry technique. The outcomes of this research will provide better testing technology for industr and lead to the revision of Eurocode BS EN408 (2012).

Bamboo-Timber composite Gridshell Structure Demonstration in COP 26
2021

Description The bamboo-timber grid shell structure which was built by a team at Edinburgh Napier University in Edinburgh, the UK, showcases has an excellent structural properties and suitable for the construction of large span roof structure. Bamboo is considered as a low-carbon construction material and some of the world’s most valuable non-timber forest products. It has an impressive tensile and compressive strength with strength to weight ratio higher than that of mild steel. This grid shell structure in the showcases, was constructed by combining engineered bamboo and fast-growing locally available low-grade timber which is an effective way of using together, renewable resources to make high-quality structures, take climate action and a source of incomes for local communities. During the construction, the grid was fabricated flat, and later pushing from the two opposite corners the arched with double-curved shape was formed changing the grid pattern into a shell structure with a unique form developing its strength and stiffness.
This grid shell structure was assembled for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s COP 26 in Glasgow.
