Project Title Patient and Prisoner Experiences: Understanding Major Mental Illness and Masculinity in the Context of Violent Offending Behaviour
Project Description The thesis examines the interaction between major mental illness and masculinity in driving violent altercations. The research involved qualitative interviews with patients in a medium secure psychiatric hospital and prisoners in a Scottish prison, all of whom had violent offending histories. The thesis found that while the causes of violence among patients and prisoners were in fact very similar, current treatment and management policies and practices dichotomise these populations. While the hospital setting and its recovery orientation create a ‘collaboration of excuse’ among patients and staff in relation to violence which facilitates the development of non-offending identities, the prison setting and the traditional desistance process present a more challenging framework for change for this group.
