Description Project - Developing frameworks for eco-directed sustainable prescribing: Towards reducing environmental pollution from healthcare practices.

Invited as one of 28 Scottish expert stakeholder to provide input on AMR.

This project will demonstrate a novel, trans-disciplinary approach to address complex sustainability issues through integration of public health, environmental science, and social science methods and data.

Expected outcomes are to:
• Introduce new (to the NHS) data sources as indicators of environmental impact into the formulary process
• Develop a robust decision-making framework for formulary recommendations which can be built on and adopted at UK- and international-level
• Increase awareness amongst healthcare practitioners, prescribers, pharmacists, and the public of the environmental impact of medicines

Delivery Group: NHS Scotland Assure Research Service Fund

Description Project PI and member of the NHS Assure Research Service Commissioning Partner Delivery Group.

£1.5 million NHS Assure fund
Apply experience, skills and knowledge to relevant research areas to assess bids against the fund’s overall objectives. This will be carried out using control tools such as scoring matrix, evaluation framework and utilising ENU’s research integrity framework. Ensuring research governance, scientific merit and quality throughout.

My specific tasks include:
1. Act as Delivery Group's point of contact for NHS Assure, connecting the ENU delivery team with NHS Scotland Assure for day to day operational decisions.
2. Chair the Sift Panel which assesses whether applications match the funds oerall objectivs/are in scope and hence should proceed to the peer review stage.
3. In partnership with NHS Assure provided input into a major update in the fund Scope, Guidelines, Application and Award Processess (2023)
4. Address enquiries from potential applicants providing fund details and provisonally advise if project might be in scope.
5. Work with potential applicants to focus their project and facilitate project consortia with academics, NHS and industrial partners.
6. Recommend peer reviewers for applications.
7. Summarise peer review for Awards Panel members
8. Contribute to the quarterly Contract Advisory Group which monitors the progress of the fund against its Terms of Reference.
9. Sand Pit Organiser - to bring stakeholdes from NHS, academcic and industry together to facilitate research project ideas which will impact NHS guidelines and practice.
10. Chair regular lunch & learning meetings to infrom potential applicants of the funds processes and scope.

Food Standards Agency Committee Member: Advisory Committee on Animal Feedingstuffs (ACAF)

Description I was appointment to the Advisory Committee on Animal Feedingstuffs (ACAF). The UK Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) newly formed independent Scientific Advisory Committee committee. [2023-2026).

This committee is responsible for undertaking a risk assessment of the safety and efficacy of all new animal feed and feed additives. The Committee will provide its assessments as independent scientific advice to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The work of the Committee will focus on the risk assessment stage of the risk analysis process, without participation in risk management responsibilities. The majority of the risk assessment work of the Committee will relate to the evaluation of feed additive dossiers seeking authorisation in Great Britain (GB). In line with legislation requirements, the additive will be assessed regarding safety risks to the target species, consumers, the user and the environment. The Committee will also assess whether the additive has the intended effect, in line with Article 4.(3) of Retained Regulation 1831/2003.

AMR Advisor to SEPA's Principle Scientist

Description Adhoc advisor to Dr John Redshaw (Principle Scientist at Scottish Environment Protection Agency) on AMR related issues. For example: Advising John in his role as SEPA's lead on Scotland's contribution to the UK AMR 5 year National Action Plans (2013-2019, 2019-2024 and the upcoming 2025-29). Provided scientific input on the development of SEPA's Bathing Warer Data Visualisation tool (https://informatics.sepa.org.uk/AMRmonitoring/). Advised John in his presentations to the AESS (AMR in Environmemt Stakeholders Scotland), Scotland's government lead group which is responsible for implementing the UK AMR NAPs.
