Abstract

This chapter examines the changes or improvements in the transport sector in Great Britain from 1998 to 2008, and compares them with those of other European countries. It evaluates how far policy objectives have been achieved and describes recent developments at the local level through an analysis of a sample of English Local Transport Plans (LTPs). The findings reveal that, outside London, the average English person will not have observed much change in their local or regional transport system and that the key variables which affect mode share have changed little in most places during this period.
