An Exploration of Attitudes and Perceptions of Freight Operators in Ireland toward adopting Bio-methane Fuelled Heavy Good Vehicles

Abstract
Road transport accounts for 75% of all transport related emissions. Within road transport, road freight contributes around 40% of the emissions, posing significant obstacles to achieving decarbonisation goals (deSaxe et al., 2023). Cleaner energy fuel vehicles (CEFVs),considered as a silver bullet for decarbonising freight transport, have received increasing attention from policy makers and industry practitioners (Mohammed et al., 2020; ITF, 2021). CEFVs are vehicles that run on fuels that produce lower carbon emissions compared to petrol or diesel. These include hydrogen, electric, solar-powered, ethanol, and biodiesel vehicles (Li et al., 2019; Mohammed et al., 2020).
However, the uptake rate of CEFs, including biomethane, by HGV freight operators in Europe remains low, with only 0.6% of all new registered HGVs in the EU running on CEFs (ACEA, 2023). Thus, this study aims to develop a freight operators’ technology adoption framework for biomethane technology to support decarbonisation of road freight transport
