Abstract

This project involved research into the barriers to work faced by very long-term unemployed people in five disadvantaged areas of Edinburgh. Interviews were carried out with 115 job seekers who had been out of work for more than one year and resided in areas of higher than average unemployment. The project sought to establish the nature of the 'employability gap' experienced by these people, given the specific context of Edinburgh's rapidly expanding labour market.
