Abstract

This paper is intended to martial some of the key points allied to the operational controls applied to the Scottish taxi industry. Much of the content is also applicable in other parts of the UK, but has been omitted given that the governing legislation differs in the devolved administrations of the UK. It is also observed, and worthy of mention at the outset, that the individual elements of control (being quality, quantity and economic restraints) tend to be considered alone. Such isolated thinking tends to be to the detriment of the travelling public, and to the trade, as discussed below. The fact that Renfrewshire (2010) appears to be considering a cross section of issues, which is extended to include accessibility and airport taxis is to their credit, even where an underlying view may be toward deregulation of quantity prior to main discussion.
