Abstract
There are many types of vehicles ply in urban parts of India. The continuous increase in their number or ownership of vehicles are creating various types of traffic and transportation problem every day. The results of such problems are visualised in terms of increased congestion, air and noise pollution, accidents, and delays in journey time. Idling of engines at signal is increasing loss of fuel, increased journey time due to increase in number of personalised mode per family. In 2005, CSIR-CRRI study reported loss of 10,000 lakh Indian rupees at 600 intersections of Delhi due to fuel loss in idling of engine at intersection, which is approximatety 15% of total fuel consumption. Apart from that delay was also observed in their journey time. Emissions coming at the time of idling of engines are hazardous to both human and ecosystem. One of the ways to conserve the fuel is to reduce the loss of fuel. Therefore, it is important to understand the quantity of emission and fuel loss due to idling at intersection. Numerous engineering and management measures can be applied to reduce fuel and its related emission. Currently there is no model which can estimate the fuel loss and emission of engine due to delay at intersection. To reduce fuel loss and related emission of engine at intersection, various suitable exploratory measures have been reviewed and presented in this research study.
