The Air Iomlaid (On Exchange) project was conceived by artist Julie Brook and Johnny Gailey, Programme Manager for Children and Young People for The Fruitmarket Gallery.
Alistair Lawson from Centre for Distributed Computing, Networking and Security (CDCS) led colleagues from IIDI in assisting with the IT Infrastructure and the development of Software Applications for the collaborative and outreach aspects of this arts project. This included working with Peter Eland from the Centre for Social Informatics (CIS) developing a zoomable interface application, and with Oli Mival and Jay Bradley from the Centre for Interaction Design (CID) developing a multi-touch application for the final exhibition.

This ambitious education project involving 60 Gaelic Medium primary school pupils from Edinburgh and Skye. It was one of the top ten projects nominated for the inaugural £10,000 Clore Award for Museum Learning.
Alistair followed this project by supervising some related student projects: the further development of the Zoomable Interface Application (Timothe Bordiga) and of the Multi-touch Interface Application (Bastien Girardot). Both projects seek to extend the novel and engaging ways to interact with the artefacts produced during Air Iomlaid.
