Tackling misinformation and disinformation for Scottish school librarians

People Involved

Project Description

It is claimed that ‘Libraries have always had a role as trusted institutions’ (Royal Society, 2022). However, librarians’ solutions to misinformation may be untested (Sullivan, 2019). Further, school librarians may be seen as ‘book-pushers’, not involved in developing pupils’ abilities to deal with mis/disinformation.

To respond to CILIPS’s call, this research focuses on ‘impact of school librarians’ and ‘professional identity/de-professionalisation’ (CILIPS, 2024) by investigating the ‘how, why and what could/should be’ of Scottish school librarians’ work to help pupils become better able to handle mis/disinformation.

Project research questions
1.How involved are school librarians in enabling pupils’ handling of mis/disinformation
2.What would they like to do?
3.What training/support do they have and wish for?
4.How can they collaborate with teachers?
5.How can this be used to advocate for school librarians/libraries?

Outputs will be mostly practitioner-facing, to support practical advances in this context.
