Can I Afford to Belong? A Qualitative Exploration of Student Belonging in Scotland During A Cost of Living Crisis

People Involved

Project Description

As we move forward from the COVID-19 pandemic, the global landscape of community and belonging has been critically altered, and the cost-of-living crisis now poses further barriers and inequalities for HE students internationally. With an increasing conceptual complexity regarding workable definitions of community and belonging, there is a need to reflect more deeply on their meaning and value in HE. Moreover, there is a need to understand students' current lived experience of belonging in the context of the cost-of-living crisis, and how this impacts on their wider university journey. This project will explore the role of socio-economic status in shaping belonging, and provide insight into the ways in which the current socioeconomic context is impacting upon and being navigated by students in HE and they communities they form. This will be achieved through qualitative interviews and focus groups with students across Scotland, and reflective video diaries.
