Project Description
A collection – a published compendium of writings in song format.
Taking Rap Academics (Hook, 2022) (https://www.solareye.co.uk/rapacademics) as a starting point, this project involves creating a collection of songs from artist/ scholar/ activists around the themes of hip-hop studies and scholarship in its widest form.
The project aim is to commission and collect songs from rap artists around the world – each writing in their own style around their thoughts on scholarship/ academia/ knowledge, following whatever thematic route they chose from this starting point. The collection is being considered as a hip-hop studies reader textbook in album form; a musical edited volume: The Hip Hop Studies Listener. The key aim is that this anthology go beyond simply being a collection of rhyming essays but also stands on its own as a cohesive album of songs in its own right.
