The project is to investigate the quantity and environmental footprint of shell residues produced by the crab meat processing "industry" (i.e. local households) in Mamanguape River Estuary and Brejinho Village, Marcacao, Paraiba, Brazil.
To ensure the sustainability of the U. cordatus fishery and maintain or improve the livelihoods of the dependent people, it is important to better understand (i) the quantities of crabs entering the crab meat processing market (ii) the fate of the empty shells, and (iii) the current socioeconomic model underlying the crab meat processing
This is a joint project with University Estadual de Paraiba (UEPB), the funding is provided by the Foundation of Support for the Research of the State of Paraiba - FAPESQ, Government of the State of Paraiba, granting the financial aid to the researcher in Brazil to fund the mobility of the academic from UK, in order to establish collaborative working, the value of the award is 15,000 BRL (£3,500) .
