The Intersection of Policing and Public Health, ESRC Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre annual conference
2025 - 2025

Recognition Type Invited Speaker
Description The intersection of Policing and Public Health

Background
Policing and public health services are inextricably intertwined, often sharing much common ground in the support people and communities at risk of harm. There are shared underlying risk factors which increase demands yet, no one organisation is adequately skilled, equipped and resourced to address the complex issues experienced by those requiring an inter-sectoral approach.
Presentation
This panel will explore the challenges and opportunities for a whole systems approach to encourage joint strategies for early intervention and prevention.
Scottish studies of policing and public health initiatives will be presented. Firstly, a collaborative approach to supporting people with dementia who go missing, and secondly, in the reduction of drug related deaths. Both initiatives are underpinned by a public health approach to policing, bringing together collective capabilities and resources to reduce risk and prevent harm.

LEPH Education? What for, what's important and how to make it happen? International LEPH Ottawa 2025
2025 - 2025

Recognition Type Invited Speaker
Description Law Enforcement and Public Health (LEPH) education sits at the intersection of multiple disciplines, yet significant challenges remain in embedding LEPH within tertiary curricula and supporting meaningful research in this space. Beyond institutional barriers such as disciplinary silos, funding constraints, and workforce demands, negative attitudes toward LEPH research—particularly from traditional academic and policing sectors—further complicate efforts to generate and disseminate impactful work. For early career researchers (ECRs), these challenges can be particularly daunting, often limiting opportunities to publish, secure grants, or gain recognition in mainstream academic forums.

By bringing together educators, researchers, and journal editors, this session will provide practical insights into advancing LEPH education and fostering a more inclusive research environment. Attendees will leave with concrete strategies for overcoming publication hurdles and strengthening the visibility of LEPH scholarship.

Beyond the Neurotypical Lens: Police Scotland's emerging approaches to Neurodivergence in Criminal Justice interactions
2025

Panel Description - Associate Professor Inga Heyman, Assistant Chief Constable Park Sutherland, Superintendent Graeme Galiee Professor Stan Gilmour

This session examines Police Scotland's pioneering work in recognising and accommodating neurological variations within criminal justice processes.

Panellists will explore how existing initiatives are challenging traditional approaches to staff wellbeing, vulnerability assessment, custody procedures, and witness interviewing techniques.

The discussion will critically analyse the tensions between medical and social models of neurodivergence, evaluate current organisational policy and practice for staff, and training programmes for frontline officers, and consider how these approaches might inform broader police and criminal justice reform across the UK.

Neurodiversity: Navigating the criminal justice system at the intersect of policing and health - Policing and Vulnerability Doctoral and ECR Webinar Series
2025 - 2025

Recognition Type Invited Speaker
Description People with a neurodiversity or neurodisability are overly represented in policing
interactions. Yet knowledge to support meaningful and positive impacts on criminal
justice systems to support people with a neurodiversity/disability are spars. In this
webinar we explore this emerging area of research. We consider the interrelated and
unmet health and social care needs of people with neurodiversities/neurodisabilities
with a focus on those coming to the attention of the police. We are interested in how to
effectively identify and navigate justice settings and what the key intervention points
should be.

Recognition Type Media Activity
Description International Blog -
Despite evidence of the extensive common ground, energy, courage for change, and innovation to integrate policies and practice across police and health sectors, it can be a frustratingly slow and complex process. Embedding a cross-disciplinary field of practice is challenging. In part, this is due to disparate educational programmes, shifting organisational leadership, political agendas and limitations on evidence based cross-disciplinary research.
