Dr Niina Turtola
Biography | My research explores cross-sections of typography, writing, literature and visual arts. My work challenges conventional and habitual forms of text, and make them strange by often highlighting areas that are unseen in our society and human behavior. In my research I extract language from everyday situations, such as discussions, news, and any other material and fragment this to my design work. use everyday life as a source for materials. PhD Topics | I am accepting PhD students in design thinking, critical practice of visual communication design and experimental typography where the artistic and scientific research methods encounter in the intersections of writing, design and arts. My expertise lies in scientific book design, artist book, page layout as theatre, communication between image and text, experimental writing/poetry/typography and text-based art and design, conceptual art. The connection between theory, practice and defining one's own voice are elemental with me. Design is never neutral and it can be societal critique when the connection is made to literature theories. |
