🎞️ Dr. Joe Qiao Li is a Film Studies lecturer and PhD supervisor at Edinburgh Napier University, specializing in Chinese-language cinema. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the UNESCO Cities of Film Network’s research book project on the global film industry. Dr. Li is the author of three influential books: Migration & Memory: Arts and Cinemas of the Chinese Diaspora (2020, MHSP), Development of the Global Film Industry: Industrial Competition and Cooperation in the Context of Globalization (2020, Routledge), and The Transformation in Global Film Production, Distribution and Consumption in the Post-Pandemic Era (Routledge, 2023).

🏆 A digital filmmaking enthusiast, Dr. Li has won awards for his short films and curated notable film festivals, including the Chinese Diaspora Film Festival in French Polynesia (2018) and the Cannes Aviff Art Film Festival.

Edinburgh Napier University made a strong impact at the 4th Wonderful World International Student Media Art Festival, winning four top awards from over 1,000 global entries.

The short film Connection (2023), created by third-year BA Film students Alex McNeill, Jack Weir, Ben Anstruther, and Yathin Lee, won Best Drama Film and Best Screenplay, highlighting emerging Scottish filmmaking talent. Set in Leith, the film explores the unlikely bond between a scammer and his elderly victim through a shared love of football.

Guided by Film Lecturer Dr Qiao (Joe) Li, students Jack Weir and Bethany Isles also took part in the festival’s 72-hour filmmaking challenge, collaborating internationally and earning Best Performance (Weir) and Best Young Filmmaker (Isles).

Dean Diane MacLean and Subject Lead Paul Gray praised the students’ achievements, reaffirming SACI’s commitment to international collaboration and industry-relevant learning.

The 2024 edition of the festival will be hosted by Korea Kookmin University, with Edinburgh Napier invited to return.
