Biography Dr Andrew Smith is a Lecturer in the School of Engineering and the Built Environment and Programme Leader for MSc Facilities Management and MSc Real Estate Management and Investment. He is the Built Environment Subject Lead for Learning and Teaching.

Andrew has over 10 years academic experience and his industrial experience includes global corporations, SMEs and the Public Sector. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a Certified Member of the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (CIWFM) and a Member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI). He has worked as an external examiner and external advisor for various universities nationally and internationally.

He has research interests in the built environment, particularly in facilities and workplace management, real estate, sustainability and higher education research. He has published more than 30 research papers on themes such as workplace wellbeing and productivity, sustainability, indoor environmental quality and the relationship of people to their working environment in Internationally-recognised academic and professional journals and conferences. Andrew is an experienced PhD supervisor and examiner.

Recent research projects include an industry funded project to investigate the wellbeing and productivity effects of plants in offices and supervision of PhDs researching sustainable facilities management in Nigeria; impacts of the work environment on midwives in clinical settings; indoor environment in primary school classrooms; emotional intelligence in the construction industry and Building Information Modelling (BIM). His PhD research was funded by the UK Government and an industrial partnership.

Andrew is also on the editorial advisory boards of several academic journals including The Journal of Facilities Management, Sustainability and The International Journal of BIM and Engineering Science.

Andrew’s role involves teaching and scholarly activity at undergraduate and postgraduate level. His teaching interests include facilities management, building economics, real estate valuation and construction financial management.
