Books to Homeless - University shows charity spirit with generous book donation

Summary Photo: Streetreads charity accepts first delivery of books from Merchiston Campus.
As part of this year's Napier Big Read, over 1,000 books donated from one campus at Edinburgh Napier University to homeless readers.
So many books have been donated, the Napier Big Read team have only been able to count the ones at Merchiston Campus. The donations from Sighthill and Craiglockhart have still to be counted!
Avril Gray, programme leader of Edinburgh Napier’s MSc Publishing, said: "The #NapierBigRead is about giving books, and we wanted to start by giving books to homeless and vulnerable readers, before distributing books to the entire university community on World Book Day, Thursday 1 March.”

Forgotten 1920s sci-fi novel by Scots author reawakened by students

Summary IT is a little-known Scottish science fiction novel which nearly sank without trace when it was published almost a century ago. Today, it is rated one of the 12 most essential Scottish sci-fi novels of all-time by the Scottish Book Trust.
The work has been snapped up for publication after recently falling out of copyright and will be repackaged and promoted to the modern-day generation of sci-fi fans by the all-female team from Edinburgh Napier University.

Yarrrr be Treasure in them Pages - CHAS get a Personal Preview of New Book

Summary Families staying at Rachel House Children’s Hospice, run by Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) were given special preview of Merchiston Publishing’s new book ‘Treasure Island: A Play’.
Rosie Howie from MSc Publishing read an extract from the book to a couple of pirates at the hospice.
Rosie Howie said: “Lynn Brittney brings Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story to life in this fantastic children’s play that the whole family can enjoy. We’re thrilled to be able to donate profits to CHAS.”
Accompanying Rosie were students Andrew Bianchi, Carol-Anne Royan, Kirstin Rhymer and Jamie Williams.
Profits from the book which has been developed for Primary School level drama will be donated to CHAS. The book officially launches on Friday 8 June 2012.

Summary Avril Gray joined a panel of experts to provide careers advice for The Guardian readers. The Q&A – ‘Careers in magazine publishing’ – advised on the different careers available in the sector, and the skills and qualifications required to secure these sought-after positions.
Publishing is the UK’s largest creative industry. It is a popular career choice for many graduates, and is incredibly hard to get into without appropriate work experience, or a relevant qualification. Avril leads the only industry accredited publishing programme in the UK.
