Working on an NIHR project in Malawi, which looks at effective prevention and treatment of preterm birth.
2018 - 2021

Description A major barrier to effective prevention and treatment of preterm birth in Malawi is the lack of an accurate, consistently applied, estimated date of delivery for each pregnant woman. This is best achieved through ultrasound Scanning (USS) measurements prior to 24 weeks gestation. The World Health Organisation (WHO) endorses the use of one ultrasound scan before 24 weeks gestation for all pregnant women, with such a goal often unattainable in many Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC) due to lack of availability of trained staff and ultrasound machines. Our team aim to provide an accurate, consistently applied EDD (estimated date of delivery) for each pregnant woman, which is maintained throughout the duration of the pregnancy and used to determine gestational age.

Prof Dianne Morrison-Beedy was a Fullbright scholar from the US who travelled to work with me in the School of Health and Social Care at ENU for 6 months.
2018

Description The purpose of this study was to conduct focus group research with sexually-active girls ages 15-19 to gain insight into sexual risk within their current cultural context and identify potential determinants of sexual-risk preventive behavior in a Scottish population and determine what refinements in materials (e.g., measures) are needed to tailor a group-based intervention (previously used with U.S. girls) to decrease sexual risk behavior. A paper has been published of this work in:

Morrison-Beedy, D., Hollins Martin, C.J., Elliot, L., Pow, ,J. (2019). Adolescents in Scotland: Challenges and opportunities for sexual risk reduction. Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care
