Biography Dr. Robert Kukla has considerable experience in developing database and knowledge base technologies on EPSRC and EU grants. He was a Research Fellow on SEEK and developer of the taxonomic concept schema (TCS) which has been ratified as a TDWG standard. He undertook a feasibility study for TDWG on the development of a core ontology for taxonomic data and investigated issues in converting an existing taxonomic data resource to employ the ontology and LSIDS.

In addition to his research activities, he maintains and further develops the University’s Research Management system and related web site where he has gained significant hands-on experience with the day-to-day running of production systems and implementing state-of-the–art web technology including visualization tools.

In 2007-2009, he worked on a Proof of Concept project “MATSE: Information Visualisation of Microarray Time-course Data”, to develop high quality interactive visualisation software for the analysis of microarray time-course data. The results of which were published widely.

He is actively engaging with small and medium sized companies in knowledge transfer projects (KTP and SFC IV). Recent examples include working with Scottish Woodlands, Plansafe Ltd and Highland Archaeology Services Ltd as well as NHS Lothian and Standard Life.
