An Application of Higher Order Sliding Modes to the Control of a Diesel Generator Set (GENSET)
Spurgeon, Sarah; Goh, Keng; Jones, Barry
Abstract
Diesel engines have become a common source of power, both for vehicles and for static equipment because they are fuel efficient, robust and reliable. It is important that diesel engines are robustly
controlled in order to maintain efficiency, minimise pollution and provide high reliability. Higher order sliding mode techniques have recently received a great deal of attention in the literature as a
robust control method with the potential to alleviate the chattering phenomenon inherent in many sliding mode control configurations. This paper presents the results of applying a particular high
order sliding mode control algorithm for speed control of a diesel generator system. Robustness is investigated and the performance is compared with that obtained by a commercial Genset controller
and a classical proportional plus integral type controller.
