The Inclusive Kerbs Phase 2 research project studied the existing kerbs in 26 locations within the City of Edinburgh, the response of functionally impaired individuals to these, and their statements of real-life experience with kerbs.
The project was commissioned by Transport Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Road Research Board (SRRB) and the Department for Transport and was conducted by Mott MacDonald and Edinburgh Napier University’s Transport Research Institute.
Phase 1 produced an initial literature review and established that this is a diverse and complex area, deserving further study considering engineering and human factors.
This Phase 2 gathered necessary data and trials methodology to form a basis for recommending future studies on inclusive mobility. It considered the holistic setting and use of the kerb for navigation parallel along a street and as a point of uncontrolled perpendicular crossing. The study has produced initial, nondefinitive, findings on kerb heights for improved inclusion, made recommendations, and set the basis of future research.
