Abstract

Award winning light and colour-changing textile, Digital Lace (ISWC 2014) was part of the showcase of textiles selected for the European funded Crysalis: The Revival of Textiles closing event and exhibition at TIO3 (Textiles Open Innovation Centre) Ronse, Belgium.

Digital Lace was the result of collaborative research initiated by Sarah Taylor and Sara Robertson as one of six proposals selected as part of a two day Expert Workshop, ‘Rejuvenating Craft’ funded by the European ‘Crysalis Project’ hosted at Plymouth College of Art in May 2014 and awarded £1K. The aim of the workshop was to allow textile craft practitioners the opportunity to realise a product through the use of new technologies and hand craft processes. Sarah Taylor and Sara Robertson were one of four guest presenters at the closing event and featured in the Crysalis: The Revival of Textiles publication.

The Proposal aimed to pool together smart textile print and constructed expertise through cross-disciplinary practice; exploit and amalgamate the responsive technologies of smart dye and fibre with digital control; and, combine handmade processes with digital technologies. The objective was to realise this as a lace-inspired product. The research was in response to the global theme, ‘Generate Collision’ and the demand for unique products utilising novel material properties and digital making (Heimtextil 2014).

Digital Lace won the International Symposium of Wearable Computers 2014 Design Exhibition Jury Award: Fibre Art.
