Abstract

Description:
People with intellectual disability (IDD) are highly dependent on their social and physical environment. This influences their ability to make healthy lifestyle choices. It is therefore important to complement existing knowledge on individual health behaviors with knowledge on how environments (i.e. where people live, work and recreate), can support a healthy lifestyle. Three presentations will share recent research projects focused on settings based health promotion for people with IDD: 1) concept mapping of health promoting settings for people with IDD, 2) efficacy of the train the trainer health matters program , 3) feasibility of dream discover and do program on promoting everyday life physical activity.

Contribution:
This round table builds on the 2017 IASSIDD Health SIRG meeting in Belfast and aims to engage and increase the group of researchers and professionals interested in settings based approaches to health promotion. The discussion will focus on the implications of using a settings based approach in the development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion projects for people with IDD. It provides the opportunity for participants to connect with international peers and share experiences and best practices. Outcomes will help move forward research on effective and efficient health promotion for people with IDD.
