The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has raised existential questions about the originality and validity of the assessments in higher education. This chapter focuses on the positive use of AI and aims to provide a policy guide for education leaders with useful recommendations to create a co-understanding of “human work” and creativity. The chapter first contextualizes the concept of human effort and uniqueness through interdisciplinary literature, and then delves into practices and practical strategies that higher education institutions (HEIs) can employ. AI is increasingly posing a threat to academic integrity, underscoring the need for HEIs to integrate AI's use and limitations in addressing academic integrity issues. The academic methods and strategies need to catch up with digital transformations and cultural variations of today’s world. This chapter proposes a co-creation method to identify and apply the appropriate usage of AI while engaging staff and students to tackle these problems. This chapter includes the use of evaluation coversheets to facilitate self-reporting of AI use and consideration of its effects. We also encourage Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to prioritize creativity and logical thinking, while also incorporating the value of originality into their assessment evaluation processes. We also recommend shifting from a punishment based approach to using AI as a tool to enhance learning and teaching, thereby preserving academic integrity through transparency and self reflection.
