Abstract

Concerning debate regarding the positive role of psychological resources during goal striving, this study presents the interactive model linking work goal progress to the valued resource. Specifically, we explored non-linear relationships of grit and perceived organizational support with work goal progress. We hypothesized that the employee’s goal pursuit is not merely contingent on the excessive availability of the selected resources, but it might be an outcome of non-linear interaction between personal resources with the environment. Our sample comprised of 293 university professors working in the USA completed questionnaires at two-time points. The study findings confirmed the curvilinear role of grit in predicting work goal progress, but the linkage between perceived organizational support and goal-related outcome appeared to be linear. Furthermore, we found that these relationships were well explained while keeping interactive effects into consideration. We discuss the theoretical implications for industry concerning performance and self-regulation based on current findings.
