The importance of context : understanding the nature of anti-social behaviour in rural Scotland.

Abstract

This chapter seeks to provide a starting point for understanding anti-social behaviour (herein ASB) within a rural context, and how this provides important illumination of the broader social processes affecting rural communities. Based on analysis of data on rural Scotland collected as part of a larger project, the chapter will begin by exploring ASB policy development across the UK before focusing specifically on Scotland. The nature of ASB in two rural communities will then be examined, with some of the similarities and differences between ‘urban’ and ‘rural’ ASB noted. The chapter concludes by exploring whether the nature of the ASB described by participants in the two case study areas is distinct enough to warrant being termed ‘rural ASB’ rather than ‘ASB in rural areas’
