Abstract

A novel Window-Integrated Concentrated Photovoltaic (WICPV) system proposed suitable for window integration, has been fabricated and characterised at 1000 Wm-2 (higher irradiance)and 500 Wm-2 (lower irradiance). This paper investigates the use of a commercially available organic phase change material (PCM) RTÒ50 for limiting the temperature rise in the system within indoor testing conditions. The results demonstrate an average of 7.4°C reduction in the system temperature at 1000 Wm-2 and 4.8°C at 500 Wm-2. It also resulted in 17% increase in electrical power efficiency at 1000 Wm-2 and 6.5 % at 500 Wm-2 within the PCM incorporated system as compared to a naturally ventilated system. Further, differential scanning calorimetric technique has been applied to assess the thermophysical properties of the PCM as any erroneous data may affect the prudent selection of PCM for particular applications. The outcome of the DSC analysis performed on the PCM indicates 10.6 % underestimation in the reported melting peak temperature value of the PCM.
