TikTok as a tool for providing pastoral and academic support to student

Abstract

This presentation explores TikTok as a platform for personal tutors in the higher education setting to provide pastoral and academic support to students. Young people are increasing using TikTok as a social media tool, but there is more to this app than dancing and ‘trends’. In this presentation, I will discuss exploratory research on the use of TikTok and demonstrate effective academic engagement with students on the app. Preliminary findings suggest that TikTok is an opportunity for tutors to break down barriers between student and tutor, and to show that we are humans and that engagement on TikTok does not compromise professionalism or integrity.
