The influence of circular web openings on the flexura behaviour of Rectangular Hollow Sections is introduced. The results of full-scale laboratory tests in three and four-point bending and the development of analytical finite element models to predict behaviour are summarised. The experimental results have confirmed the finite element work in relation to stiffness, ultimate capacity and failure modes. A parametric finite element study using experimentally calibrated models has extended the investigation, allowing the consideration of perforations with various diameters. The performance of perforated Rectangular Hollow Sections is briefly compared to that of perforated I-beams with reference to the European design code. The research is applicable to any field of engineering where it is advantageous to cut holes in the webs of load bearing hollow rectangular steel sections, although the primary aim was to develop the basis of design rules for Rectangular Hollow Section Slim Floor edge beams with web openings.
