Barriers to Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurs-investigating the Evidence and Examining the Turfs

Abstract

A report commissioned by the Federation of Small Businesses in Scotland, articulated that ethnic minority-led SMEs generated £13 billion in revenue and 107,000 jobs for the Scottish economy (FSB, 2020). Despite this feat, there is clear evidence that Ethnic Minority Businesses (EMBs) are challenged with constraints that affects their business growth. For instance, most EMBs are subject to immigration control, lack of access to finance and have no Recourse to Public funds. Also, the growing population diversity across the Scotland and by extension the UK landscape, suggests a need to understand the key socio-economic barriers that deserve prompt attention facing ethnic minority owned businesses.

Guided by a qualitative investigation of 12 Ethnic Minority Businesses (EMBs) in Edinburgh, the following research questions were worth investigating:
RQ1: What are the structural constraints facing ethnic minority businesses in Edinburgh?
RQ2: What are the cultural processes that drive the development of minority businesses in Edinburgh?
RQ3: How do current policy environment impact upon the development of ethnic minority businesses?
