Abstract

Two cases of severe age-related eye maculopathy diagnosed in a 73-year-old and a 53-year-old patient are presented. A gel formulation containing a new recombinant form of manganese superoxide dismutase (rMnSOD) was administered to both patients, as compassionate use only for the left eye. The optical coherence tomography imaging (OCT) showed an improvement of the maculopathy for both patients with a significant improvement in the visual acuity of the treated eye compared to the controlateral one. Our results suggest that the rMnSOD gel formulation exerts a therapeutic action on macular degeneration.
