Abstract

A hydro-bio-mechanical (HBM) model of waste degradation has been under development for several years to simulate the actual processes involved in the settlement of landfilled wastes. The objective of this current research is the further development of the model and preparation of an accompanying protocol to analyse, interpret and predict the magnitude and time to completion of long-term landfill settlement in relation to waste factors and site operations. To assess the performance of the model, data sets of recorded landfill settlements and the factors influencing settlement have been obtained from over 15 landfills in the UK and internationally. The data are being evaluated and assembled for application in the model evaluation and validation. The variable availability of data sets from landfill operators is discussed together with the commercial benefits of recording, compiling and reviewing integrated data sets.
