Abstract
Two tunable PIFA antennas are presented. The first is a dual-band handset antenna with tuning introduced across the slot using either a lumped capacitor or a varactor diode. Suitable tunability is initially established and tested for two resonant frequencies by placing lumped capacitors in the range of 1.5 to 4 pF along the slot of the radiator. Good agreement is obtained between predicted and measured input return loss, gain and radiation pattern over the tuned frequency range. Secondly, by reducing the size of the first design, a wide band compact antenna with a tunable band response is proposed. The desirable performance of a wide frequency tuning band with this antenna is realized between 1.75 and 2.4 GHz by loading an embedded resonant slot with a varactor diode with equivalent capacitor range of 0.5 to 2.5 pF. Two software simulation packages were used for comparison purposes.
