Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to establish how occupational therapists have implemented Recovery principles in acute psychiatric hospitals in Ireland. Recovery can be defined as a "deeply personal, unique process of changing one's attitudes, values, feelings, skills and roles" (Anthony, 1993, p2). The Irish framework document 'A Vision for recovery model in Irish mental health services' (Mental Health commission (MHC, 2005)) urged professionals to practice in a 'Recovery focused manner'. The cor principles of recovery are closely connected to the philosophy of Occupational Therapy. The core assumptions/principles of recovery as outlined by Anthony (2000) include self determination, social support, process not cause effect, focus on strengths, uniqueness, client centred and iatrogenesis which echoes clearly with the profession of Occupational Therapy.
Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with occupational therapists in various Irish acute psychiatric hospitals to establish if therapists have altered their practice since the introduction of recovery principles. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings suggested that therapists perceived that they had always worked in a person-centred, hopeful and solution focused manner. Participants identified a need for an increase of service user participation to enhance their clients recovery; as well as recovery education for all staff. Barriers to adopting the approach included reluctance of other staff members to change, and not using resources in an effective manner. The findings highlighted a service commitment to changing practice was required for services to work with and implement the principles to maximise recovery in practice.
