Biography Dr Inga Heyman , Associate Professor is a subject expert in Policing and Public Health at Edinburgh Napier University. She is an Honorary Member of the Faculty of Public Health, Fellow of the Global Law Enforcement Association and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy . She is Co-Director of the Scottish Centre for Policing and Public Health based in the interdisciplinary Centre for Mental Health Practice, Policy and Law Research (CMHPPLR) and Adjunct Associate Professor, The University of Tasmania. Inga is also a Research Affiliate to the ESRC Vulnerability and Policing Future Research Centre and a member of the Scottish Institute of Policing Research Public Protection network Steering Group.

Inga has served on the Board of of the Global Law Enforcement and Public Health Association and as invited expert witness and adviser to national and international governments. She has held expert advisory roles on national and international groups including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the HMICS review in Policing and Mental Health .

Inga's international, interdisciplinary clinical, educational and research career spans 41 years. Her professional practice focus lies at the intersect of policing and public health is underpinned by her clinical practice as a registered Adult and Mental Health Nurse and teacher working across health and police services in Scotland and Australia

Inga is Co- Lead for Collaborative Practice and Inter-professional Learning in the School of Health and Social Care. She has held module leadership roles in the School of Health and Social Care and School of Applied Sciences.

She has been honoured with a number of awards for teaching and research . Recently these have included finalist and Highly commended is the Times Higher Education Awards Research Project of the Year: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (2024) . Commendation for Research project of the Year in the The Herald Education Awards (2024). Shortlisted finalists for The Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards (2023) and Best Lecturer in the School of Health and Social Care.(2024),

Inga has enjoyed a strong and continued affiliation with the Global Law Enforcement and Public Health Association (GLEPHA) having served in the organising committee or as conference program member of the 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th International Law Enforcement and Public Health Conferences. She was Conference Director and host for the 5th International Law Enforcement and Public Health Conference and international satellite special interest group events and meetings in Edinburgh 2019. Inga is Co- lead of GLEPHA Educations Special interest groups supporting international knowledge exchange , post graduate students and teaching and learning development at the intersect of policing and public health

Inga co-convened the National Summit on Mental Health, Distress and Emergency Departments, both hosted by Edinburgh Napier University and supported by the Health & Justice Collaboration Board of The Scottish Government and GLEPHA (www.leph2019edinburgh.com).

Research Interests Inga is a qualitative researcher. Her research interests lie in public protection, policing and mental health and substance use
Teaching and Learning Inga is Co-lead for interprofessional learning and collaborative practice, is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has a strong track record of module leadership and development in the School of Health and Social Care and School of Applied Sciences.

Inga's teaching philosophy integrates interdisciplinary experiential education, simulation, teaching and learning theory and interprofessional research, as key components of the learning process.

Inga's teaching and IPL is informed by engagement with citizens, employers and our communities, to ensure the course curriculum is addressing contemporary work practice, is rich in IPL research, and professional and educational leadership.

Inga's developed the School of health and Social Care Interprofessional Learning and Collaborative Practice Strategy (2020) The strategy strives to ensure graduates will exit with a strong professional identity; and well-developed common, complementary, and collaborative competencies to lead and deliver care of the highest quality.

Inga's teaching and IPL strategy reflects the distinctiveness and values of Edinburgh Napier University which seeks disciplines to connect and that our professionally orientated portfolio of teaching and high-quality research addresses ‘live' challenges, whilst making an impact on communities locally, nationally, and internationally. Thus, mirroring contemporary integrated practice partnerships.

Inga aims to foster and leverage unique cross-university relationships to push the boundaries of traditional IPL to extending collaborative learning that extends learning beyond the eight professions within the school, and include the School of Applied Sciences. develop an innovative IPL portfolio with students and researchers within policing, education, psychology, and criminology - thus reflecting contemporary intersectoral working. the School of Health and Social Care (SCHS) seeks to develop an innovative IPL portfolio


In her teaching , Inga aims to encourage student learning and critical thinking through creation of exciting, vibrant yet safe environments , where students feel comfortable to think beyond professional boundaries. Students are encouraged to question, share opinions and experiences to support peer and cross disciplinary learning

Inga has led in the development and design of Interdisciplinary learning tools :

2015. COLT for Prevent (Collaborative Outcomes Learning Tool for Prevent). Scottish Prevention of Violent Extremism Unit. Scottish Government. Development of multiagency learning resource to support an understanding of Prevent multi-agency responses.

2014. COLT (Collaborative Outcomes Learning Tool) Police Scotland. An interactive learning resource to support a multiagency understanding of complex public protection practice.

Both learning tools were finalists in British Learning on Screen Award, The British Universities Film and Video Council, London. COLT (Collaborative Outcomes Learning Tool) receiving a highly commended award
