Dr Mandy Winterton

Biography I joined Edinburgh Napier University in 2012, and I am a Reader in Sociology, and the Research Lead for the Social Sciences. I sit on the School's Research Ethics and Integrity Committee.

Prior to joining Edinburgh Napier University I was at the University of Leeds as the Research Fellow on the ESRC Timescapes Secondary Analysis Project.

I have a Masters in Research, and Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh, (sociology and education), a Masters in Contemporary Sociology from Lancaster University, and an undergraduate degree in Business. .
Research Interests My research interests are varied but cohere around the issue of social inequality. Most recently this has been applied to military families (familial dynamics, relationships to welfare and forms of support, transitions to civilian lives amongst military veterans). I continue my long standing interest in all forms of educational inequality and have undertaken research independently, and as part of the Moray House School of Education research community) on aspects such as gendered and classed relationships to education, bullying, and widening participation in higher education to under-represented groups (looked after children, working class men and women etc).
I also have research interests in research methods. As Research Fellow for ESRC Timescapes at the University of Leeds, I was part of a pioneering team seeking to establish the efficacy of undertaking secondary analysis of extant qualitative data. So qualitative research methods, and issues of context and researcher positionality in particular are high on my research agenda.
Teaching and Learning I teach on a number of undergraduate modules, from 1st year sociology and social change modules, to 3rd year methods and social theory modules, and forth year identity and also research supervision modules.

I supervise 3 PhD students, one on social class and participation in physical activity, and two on military families.
